Understanding Reformer Spring Resistance

  • The Practice Space 4220 Southeast Belmont Street Portland, OR, 97215 United States (map)

Ever feel like the spring resistance your instructor suggested doesn't feel quite right? The spring tension you choose (or your instructor chooses for you) will have a significant impact on the sensations you feel during any exercise on the Reformer. In fact, the goal of the exercise can completely change based on the amount of spring resistance, think side splits heavy springs (outer hips) and side splits light springs (inner thighs).

At The Practice Space we want students to have agency over their body, mind, and life. Understanding the equipment and props you use can deepen the practice and take some of the guesswork out of class.

In this workshop, students will learn what "load" is, how spring resistance can be manipulated to increase the work or provide more support and how elevation and props can increase or decrease those sensations.
